Brentwood Home Mattress Review

Last Update: August 2018

One of the most common complaints among Americans is that they aren’t getting enough sleep. Sure, this can be caused by factors such as stress, long hours at work, or our increasing caffeine addiction. However, the topic that is discussed least is quite possibly the most important.

Your mattress has a lot to do with the quality of your sleep. If you’re sleeping on an old springy mattress, you’re only get 70% of the rest that you actually need. You’re constant twisting and turning, nightly discomfort, and midnight wake-ups are a testament to this. Instead of being able to sleep for a solid 8 hours, you’re likely getting 6.

Today we’re going to be giving you our 100% unbiased Brentwood Home mattress review. These guys have over 30 years of experience in the mattress industry. Combine this with their award-winning signature Oceano mattress, and you’ve got yourself a manufacturer you can trust.

About Brentwood Home

Brentwood Home has been making mattresses and other home essentials since 1987. They started as a collective of artists and furniture makers with a dream of revolutionizing the way people slept. Based out of Los Angeles, California, they have no shortage of creative direction.

What’s unique about Brentwood Home is their commitment to making a positive impact on the environment. They wanted to use only healthy and ethically-sourced materials in their mattress. Back in the late-1980’s, this was unheard of. Environmental awareness was the last thing on consumers’ minds. Today, however, this mindset has taken their company farther than they would have ever thought.

Their dedication to both high-quality craftsmanship and a sustainable business is what sets them apart. Up until 2012, they sold all of their mattresses through mattress retailers. The retailers, in turn, would price the mattresses even higher. Brentwood Home wanted to make their mattresses cheaper and more accessible, though.

In 2012, they made the move to start selling all of their mattresses online instead of in stores. This allowed them to keep their prices low, and maintain their healthy brand image.

Brentwood Home’s Technique

One of the things you’ll read about in almost every Brentwood Home mattress review is the “handcrafted experience.” Most mattresses today are made almost entirely by machines and robots. Brentwood Home wanted to maintain their image as a personal brand, however. Every hand-tufted wool rosette, pillow top cushioning, and trim stitching is done entirely by hand.

Brentwood Home makes a wide variety of mattresses for different styles and preferences. Today, however, we’re going to be focusing on their flagship mattress: the Oceano. It is a hybrid mattress that features both memory foam and a pocketed coil support system. In today’s Brentwood Home mattress review, we’re going to break all of the layers down.

For the Oceano mattress, Brentwood Home created a multi-layer design. From the Tencel knit cover, all the way down to the support base, this mattress is designed to provide high-quality sleep.  It strikes a good balance between robust support and plush comfort. It definitely sides more with comfort than it does firm support, though. You can sink right into the mattress, or you can bounce around for a bit. The choice is yours.

Let’s start by discussing the cover before we get any deeper. The first thing that you’ll notice is the elaborate tufts that cover the surface. Not only do these provide a soft pillowtop for added sinkage, but they help cool you. While you sleep, these pockets allow hot air to dissipate and cool air to flow back in. This keeps your legs and back cool and keeps you from waking up hot and sweaty.

There’s more to this upper layer than meets the eye, however. It’s made from a material called Tencel. This is a sustainable fabric made from regenerated wood cellulose. It also doesn’t trap heat, which adds an additional level of cooling comfort to help you sleep.

Underneath this top layer of Tencel fabric is all-natural New Zealand wool which makes up the pillowtop. This soft wool is unlike almost any other. The New Zealand winters can be very cold, and as a result, the sheep grow thick, soft wool that is different from American sheep. This wool is used in high-quality clothing and mattresses such as this. It provides superior temperature regulation and comfort all in one.

Gel Memory Foam Layer

Underneath the luxurious pillow top is another layer designed for pure comfort. It is a 2-inch thick layer of gel memory foam which helps the mattress conform to every curve. This gives you that wonderful cradling feeling that only luxury mattresses can provide.

In addition to comfort, this gel memory foam layer also isolates motion. This means that you won’t be able to feel your partners constant twitching the whole night. When you both wake up feeling happy and well-rested, the mattress will have already paid for itself.

Finally, gel memory foam doesn’t absorb heat. The problem with traditional memory foam is that it absorbs your body heat and gets hotter by the hour. This can cause many sleepers discomfort which can lead to them waking up in the middle of the night. Gel foam stays neutral and conducts heat away from your body.

Individual Microcoil Layer

Now, we’re going to get into the first support layer. This is made of individually-wrapped springs, known as pocketed coils. This is what gives the Brentwood Home Oceano mattress its naturally bouncy feel. It helps to balance out the super-absorbent gel foam layer.

These small 2.5-inch thick coils give you support in all of the right places. They sink to your heavy areas (head, shoulders, hips, and knees), and rise to the raised areas (neck, lower back, sides). This provides an even level of support across the surface of the mattress. It also helps to keep your spine properly aligned to prevent future back pain.

Airlux Foam

Remember when we said that attention to detail was Brentwood Home’s specialty? This is more than evidence enough. They implemented an entire layer of Airlux foam between the base coils and microcoil layer.

This serves two purposes. The first is to allow airflow to get in through the mattress springs. This prevents heat buildup and allows a constant circulation of cool air under your body and the memory foam layers.

The second purpose is to help both spring layers work in congruence with each other. The weight transferred from the upper microcoils will be evenly distributed across the supportive base coils.

Base Coils

Finally, we reach our final layer. The lower level of the Brentwood Home Oceano mattress is made up of a thick layer of individually-pocketed coils. These coils aren’t quite as dense as the upper layer, and their primary purpose is to be supportive.

Whether you’re sleeping alone or with a partner, you don’t have to worry about sinking too deep. These springs easily transfer all of your weight across their surface and prevent sagging, while providing superior edge support.

If you take a look at the average Brentwood Home mattress review about the Oceano, you’ll find that it’s a pretty soft bed. The manufacturers rate it at a medium-plush level of firmness. This means that it’s a little softer than the average mattress you’ll find in a showroom.

If you’re looking for something that’s a little on the firmer side, you might want to take a look at the Tuft & Needle mattress. However, if comfort and luxury are what you’re looking for, then the Brentwood Home Ocean does not disappoint.

What Else to Look Out For

Brentwood Home has a lot of confidence in their product. They back this confidence with a limited 25-year warranty that covers any manufacturer defects. Additionally, they give you a 120-night trial period to make a final decision. This is about a month longer than most competing bed-in-a-box brands.

Poor Edge Support

While the thick layer of supportive base coils provides good edge support, there is still room for improvement. This is common with many luxury mattresses. The upper layers of pillow top and gel, while comfortable, don’t provide the best all-around edge support.

If you plan on sleeping with a partner, then this is something to be aware of. If you get too close to one of the corners of the mattress, you may find yourself sinking more than you’d like. For most people, this is a trivial detail, but we felt that it was worth mentioning.
